Creative Embroidery
I’ve wanted to teach Creative Embroidery for a long, long time now! The techniques we’ll learn are some of my favourites from studying Textile Art at the National College of Art and Design in Dublin. On the first day, my tutor gave me some cotton calico and she told me to play with the fabric; gather it, pleat it, fold it, ruche it, tear it, fray it, paint it, tea-stain it, layer it. I was so, so hesitant at first and it took a lot of encouragement and smiles from her before I allowed myself to let go and have fun. Once I got into the flow, I couldn’t stop! Years later, working for Dior on a gorgeous embroidery for Maria Grazia Chiuri in Paris, we were asked to delicately fray the edges of a black silk organza to give a vintage effect. My heart filled with joy, who knew that playing was allowed in Haute Couture embroidery!
The Creative Embroidery course will begin with a presentation of my own Art Practice to inspire and encourage you on your own embroidered journey. We’ll have lots of fun with fabric sampling, and then I’ll introduce the joys of free-machine embroidery. Hands-down, this is my favourite technique! Next I’ll introduce magic muslin which is - absolutely magique! The adventure continues with easy appliqué techniques, painting on fabrics and embroidering on paper. I’ll also show you how to make beautiful fabric/notebook pages.
Creative Embroidery is for everyone, no experience necessary. I’ll be focusing on introducing as many techniques as I can to inspire and encourage you to play, be creative and see the unexpected beauty of a frayed edge!
The course will be hosted on Zoom from 6:30pm to 7:30pm Paris time. The classes will be recorded and available to watch for the duration of the course. If you would like to sign up for Creative Embroidery (yay!), the dates for your diary are Sunday the 29th of October and Sunday the 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th of November.
